Soccer Argentina

In Argentina, football (soccer) is much more than just a very popular sport: it is part of the country’s culture. Kids play it at school during breaks, while adults enjoy a friendly game of football in indoor fields. You don’t have to walk for too long until you find a football pitch in any city.

National football team

The Argentina national football team won two Football World Cups and an Olympic Gold Medal. It’s also the winner of 14 South American Championships and one Confederation cup.

The women national football team is quite far behind in fame and achievements but has participated in several important events, including FIFA Women’s World Cup 2003.

Diego Maradona

Diego Armando Maradona is an idol and anyone who knows a bit of football knows where he is from. In 2000 he shared the FIFA Player of the Century award with Pelé. Maradona won many trophies with Boca and then with FC Barcelona and SSC Napoli. He also played in four FIFA World Cup tournaments and was part of the team which won the cup in 1986 (against West Germany). In the quarter-final of the ’86 tournament against England he scored both goals (one of them is known as the “Goal of the Century”).

Unfortunately his “encounters” with illegal substances brought him a lot of problems, including being suspended for 15 months in 1991 after a failed doping test for cocaine in Italy. He seemed not to learn his lesson and was suspended again because he failed the test for ephedrine during the 1994 World Cup in USA.

After retiring he continued to have problems with his health, weight and cocaine abuse. After a weight loss surgery and finally managing to kick the cocaine addiction, he is now hosting TV shows in Argentina.
