Macau has been divided into three regions: the peninsula and two islands; however, recent land reclamation has created the fourth region, the Cotai strip which is home to the newest casinos in Macau.

If you are not looking to plunge into the gambling scene of Macau, then look for accommodation either in Taipa or on the Macau Peninsula , the latter being the most developed area and the center of all tourist industry. Hotels in Macau range from 3-stars to luxury 5-stars. However, Macau is not exactly a very cheap place to visit, so even if you look for 3-star hotels, expect to pay at least 3 times as much as you’d pay in mainland China.

In Macau Center, a double room in a 3-star hotel starts at 680 CNY (US$108) per night in mid-May 2012 and you’ll be close to the Barrier Gate. In Taipa, for a similar room expect to pay from 650 CNY (US$103) but you’ll be close to the airport.
