Crete

The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of the Peloponnese. The island is a land of contrasts but everything blends in nicely: you’ll find pristine beaches right by the mountains, you can go from chaotic cities to small villages and from dry areas to the lush forests.

The most important archeological site on the island is The Palace of Knossos, home of the legendary Minotaur. The incredible labyrinth consists of 1300 rooms, out of which only 800 are open now. Other important places to visit include the Venetian castle at Rethymno, the archaeological site of Gortys, churches, monasteries and the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

No visit to Crete is complete without trying the local cuisine; try the local cheese, salads, seafood and desserts. To make it a perfect night out, make sure to find a restaurant where they play live traditional Cretan music.
