Thessaloniki

One of the oldest European cities and Greece’s second largest Thessaloniki is more sophisticated, laid-back and relaxed than Athens. It’s a shopping heaven for those who come here and a students’ city which definitely influences the nightlife.

But Thessaloniki doesn’t lack historical sites either. The Romans, Ottomans and Jewish dominated the area and all left important marks on the city. The most important landmark is, without a doubt, the White Tower. Currently a museum, it used to be a garrison, prison and a fort. Other important archeological sites include: The Old Arch, the Roman Baths, The Palace of Galerius, the Roman Market and The City Walls. There are plenty of museums to check out, as well as churches and synagogues.

While here, make sure to try the “ouzeries”, where you can sample some ouzo along with the traditional mezedes. After dinner you can also check out the incredible vibrant nightlife.
