Calling Florence the birthplace of the Renaissance may seem cliche, but it's true. This city gave birth to more world-famous artists than just about any other - and these are artists even people who don't like art have heard of! There are some excellent art museums in Florence that are definitely worth checking out, but even if you're totally not in the mood for art you won't be bored in the Tuscan capital.
Florence's historic center is full of cobblestoned beauty, and it's easy to explore on foot. Shopaholics should note the outdoor leather markets (and practice their haggling skills), and foodies should make an effort to try all the gelato shops they find. Florence is well known for its excellent gelato, not to mention the big Bistecca Fiorentina on many a restaurant menu. Note that one is often large enough to share.
