A relatively compact city, Amsterdam has an outsized reputation for several key reasons. The anything-goes part of the city is more than just a myth. Yes, prostitution is legal, and one of the oldest neighborhoods in town, the Red Light District, has pockets with flirtatious girls behind windows trying to attract business. There is also about 150 coffeeshops, where marijuana and hash are sold and consumed openly and without danger.

But even without those elements Amsterdam would still be a tourist mecca. It's distinctive 17th Century architecture on display around the gorgeous canals makes for a postcard-perfect background that is only rivaled by Paris and Venice. There are also many world-class museums, and excellent nightlife. You can explore any of these aspects that appeal to you, but no one should worry about any of it because it all mingles together in a pleasant mix that has earned it millions of worldwide fans.
