Christchurch is the third largest city in New Zealand, offering an English-like feel. Its heritage shows particularly in the old buildings. An excellent example is the Anglican Cathedral located right in the city center. The River Avalon along with the trees which grow in the suburbs, create a relaxing atmosphere and a very “green” city. Since the city is flat, bicycle lanes have recently been added to promote this way of transport.
When looking for accommodation in Christchurch, consider the hostels, especially if you have a low budget and want to stay close to the city’s main attractions. Do consider though that some hostels might not be open for business due to the earthquake in February 2011. Make sure to check the booking websites (or the hostels’ sites) before choose a place to stay. Also, as a result of the natural disaster the prices have gone down quite a bit in the recent months.
Most hostels offer a common kitchen, so you can save more money by catering for yourself. And even if you choose to stay further from the city center, renting a bike is a cheap option.
