Located with eye sight of Maui, the entire island of Lanai was once dedicated to a huge pineapple plantation and remains a remote and fairly unvisited island in the Hawaiian archipelago. Although there is only one town of any substantial size on the island and not as many accommodation or restaurant options as the other islands, those who want to get off the beaten path will be in heaven on Lanai.
In recent years, there has been more of a tourism industry to spring up on Lanai, which is only home to approximately 3,000 full-time residents. Areas like the "Garden of the Gods" will make visitors feel like they've stepped onto Mars, and Lanai is also home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the islands with terrific snorkeling at Hulopoe Bay as well as the Luahiwa Petroglyphs, which date back more than 500 years.
