Two airports serving Shanghai
Pudong International Airport (PVG) is the city’s main airport, located 40 km from the city center. It has two huge terminals, connected by a shuttle bus and conveyor belts. The airport is hub for Air China, China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Spring Airlines. It is the main hub for China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines and the international hub for international hub for Air China. In other words, start by looking for flights operated by these three carriers and then decide the flight to choose. The airport handles flights to/from all over the world.
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) serves mostly domestic flights, with limited international departures/arrivals. It is located just 13 km from the city center. The airport is hub for China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Spring Air.
The two airports are connected by metro. A faster way to get between the two airports is to take the Maglev train for part of the transfer.
How to save on flights to Shanghai
Autumn, from mid-September to mid-November, is neither too hot nor too rainy, making it perfect for exploring the city. However, this is when others plan to come here, too, so make sure to book your ticket in advance.
Even if you find a direct flight, it’s also worth it to check the connecting flights. The prices might be more affordable and the waiting times aren’t always uncomfortable.
As much as possible, avoid flying over the weekend. Best rates are generally found for flights on Tuesdays to Thursdays.
