Fort Lauderdale is most famous for the boats and beaches. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities and during the weekend evenings the clubs are filled with party goers.

Location

Fort Lauderdale is located on the Atlantic Coast. It is often known as the “Venice of America” due to its canal system.

How to get to Fort Lauderdale

By plane

The most important airport serving the city is Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) , located just 2 miles from downtown. It is very popular among low cost carriers. Spirit Airlines uses it as a hub. It is the main domestic airport for flight to/ from South Florida and lately more and more flights to the Caribbean and Latin America have been added to this airport.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is located about 25 miles from Fort Lauderdale and is a major international airport in the area. It is hub for the American Airlines flights to Latin America and also gets plenty of traffic from Europe.

By train

Amtrak provides services to the cities on the Atlantic Coast but not directly from Fort Lauderdale. You need to travel to Orlando , Tampa or Miami to catch the train for connections with other cities on the Atlantic Coast. A suburban service provider , Tri-Rail links Miami Airport to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

By bus

Greyhound offers links to most cities within the US (and thanks to the connecting routes , all the way up to Canada)

By car

Three main interstate roads connect Fort Lauderdale to the rest of the state and , further, to the rest of the USA. I-95 is the major North-South artery connecting Fort Lauderdale to Miami. Florida’s Turnpike also runs North-South and connects to Orlando, while I-595/I-75 connects Fort Lauderdale to Florida’s West Coast.

By ship

Port Evergaldes is the second most active cruise port in Florida.

Weather

Fort Lauderdale has a tropical rainforest climate , with little seasonal variation in temperature. The city doesn’t have a true dry season. Most of the rain falls in the summer but winters also receive their fair share of rain.

Summer lasts from May to October and it’s hot and humid. The average high temperature is 86-90F and the average low is 71-76F.

Winter lasts from November to April and it’s mostly dry. The average high temperature is 75-82F and the average low is 59-67F. Cold fronts may dip the temperatures down to 40sF but it snows on very rare occasions.

What to do

The beaches are definitely why tourists flock to Fort Lauderdale. The Strip, running from Las Olas Boulevard to Sunrise Boulevard , is the most popular section of the beach. Snorkeling and diving are definitely among the most popular sports in the area, but let’s not forget about golfing either.

An array of restaurants, boutiques and art galleries can be found in downtown , while the entertainment district features upscale shops and restaurants. Add the fancy clubs and you’ve got an idea of what you can do here.

If you are the active type of traveler, you’ll love jogging along the Strip or renting a bike to soak up the atmosphere.

Thanks to its location, Fort Lauderdale is an excellent getaway point to Bahamas. So, you can easily plan a side trip and not break your budget, thanks to the many low cost carriers serving the route.
