Key West

Key West is a popular island getaway for many Florida residents. It is an easy way to “get away from it all” without going very far. These islands have seen a number of famous people, but the most notable are Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams.


Key West is both a city and an island. Key West the city is located near the southernmost tip of Florida. The city encompasses the island of Key West as well as a number of the surrounding islands. Key West is the southern most state in the Continental United States.

How to get to Key West

There are a number of way to get to Key West. One popular way by locals is to drive down US1 south and take a ferry to the islands. International visitors may fly directly to Key West International Airport or get a connecting flight from Miami International Airport.





Key West claims to be the only state in the lower 48 that has never had a frost. Thanks to its location near the Gulf Stream, Straits of Florida, and Gulf of Mexico; Key West get a very mild climate. The temperatures are pretty standard year round. Winter time only sees a difference in temperature of about 12 degrees.

Key West does have a rainy and dry season. November through April is known as the dry season, but still has regular light shower. May through October is the wet season and has numerous showers and thunderstorms.

What to do

Rent a Bike – Many of the touristy places in Key West are easy to get to via bike. Spending the day pedaling around the island is a great way to see Key West on a budget.

Margaritaville – One of the famous Jimmy Buffet chain of restaurants, Margaritaville, can be found here. Definitely a must do when in Key West. Decent food and a cool atmosphere.

Sunset at Mallory Square – A must do that is completely free. Visit Mallory Square around sunset to see one of the most beautiful sun sets in the world.

SCUBA and Snorkel – Key West has a ton of great reefs and dive spots. Spend some time researching the dive operators and find the trip that is right for you. Snorkeling is a cheap way to explore the underwater world.
