Weather in Germany

Located in Central Europe, Germany shares borders with nine European countries; to the north is Denmark; to the east are Poland and Czech Rep.; to the south are Austria and Switzerland; to the southwest is France; and to the west are Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Germany is a large country — 7th largest by area in Europe – hence there are several climates you’ll encounter. But overall, the climate is moderate without extremes.

  • Coast Germany & Northwest: maritime climate due to the winds from the North Sea. The summers are warm and the winters are mild. The rain is common year round.
  • Continental: inland. The summers are warm and the winters are cold.
  • Center & South: transitional climate which can be either continental or maritime, depending on the general weather conditions.
  • Alpine regions: mountain climate. The higher you go, the colder the air is. Also, it’s humid and there are more precipitations.

The coldest month is January, with temperatures ranging from 2C in the north and -2C in the south. The hottest month is July , with temperatures ranging from 16C in the north and 18C in the south.

Best Time to Visit Germany

As it happens with European destinations, Germany is a year-round destination. However, the most popular time to get here is between May and September. The Christmas Markets (so the entire month of December) is also preferred by tourists.

If you want to escape the crowds, plan your visit between January and April. That’s when the flights and accommodation are cheaper, too. Be aware that during important events — i.e. the Oktoberfest in Munich — the prices can skyrocket. And they are always higher during mid-summer than during the rest of the year.

Should you look for active cities but at a reasonable price and without the crowds, it’s best to plan your visit in early May or late September. Do remember that neither spring, nor fall offer reliable weather.
