Swiss 1291 Hostel

Swiss 1291 Hostel goes by many names, including 1291 Sleep and 1291 Manhattan, but the address and ethos is always the same. The idea is that by staying in a traditional Manhattan apartment building you can experience New York life as if you were a New Yorker. Whether or not that is specifically true, this hostel does feature some bargain beds in Manhattan.

Located a couple of blocks from Central Park on West 55th Street, Swiss 1291 Hostel makes visiting New York’s sights easy. Whether on foot or on the excellent subway system, you are only a few minutes from everything you want to see and do in New York. The rooms at this hostel come in three categories, from the “budget” end for backpackers and those looking for dorm-style accommodations, to the middle tier of “basic” which are small no-frills private rooms, to the other end which they call the “New Yorker” suite – these are apartments with kitchens, bathrooms and even a few with jacuzzi tubs. There is something for everyone on any budget here.

Swiss 1291 Hostel is offering a new feature which begins in the fall of 2007 – if you book a private room or an apartment, you can have the use of your very own cell phone for free for the duration of your stay. The phone includes free outgoing calls within the USA and you can receive international calls for free as well. If you do not have your own cell phone, this could be a great way for family and friends to check in on you – ask about it when you reserve your room.

While staying at Swiss 1291 Hostel might not make you feel any more like a New Yorker than staying any place else (except, of course, your own New York apartment), it does have a nice central location and offers a wide variety of beds at different price levels so that every travel budget is taken care of.
