How to get to Isla Mujeres
DOWNLOAD OUR TRAVEL GUIDES
You can get to Isla Mujeres either on a tour boat from Cancun or on a ferry. If you are looking to save money and love to travel with the locals, choose the ferry. If you are in a hurry and plan to stay on the island only for a day, choose the tour boat.
What to do
The island is small so you shouldn’t worry about walking everywhere. Alternatively, you can rent a scooter or a golf cart.
Turtle Farm is a Government-sponsored hatchery for endangered sea turtles. You can go there and see the little turtle in tanks.
At the southern tip of the island you’ll find the Mayan Lighthouse and Temple of Ixchel. The site is now in ruins but once there were a lighthouse and temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility.
There are several fine beaches on the island. Unfortunately some of them were damaged by Wilma but efforts have been made to take the beaches back to their old splendor. Playa Sol is the best place to watch the sunset and go for a romantic walk. It’s located on the northwestern tip of the island and is less crowded than other beaches.
Garafon Park is the perfect place to go snorkeling. It’s a preferred snorkeling destination for those coming to the island only for a short stop so it can get really crowded during the peak season. The entrance to the park is quite expensive as well.
Other snorkeling places off the island’s shores are Cuevones and Banderas Reefs. Both offer incredible views.
Dolphin Discovery is a park which allows tourists to play and swim with dolphins. As expected, it’s yet another site crowded with tourists coming on a day trip from Cancun.
- If you are looking for a luxury vacation, you are better off not choosing a hotel on the island. However, if you like the laid back atmosphere and don’t mind staying in budget hotels or hostel, you should book a room right on the island.
- Shopping should be part of your vacation. Silver is the item you should buy (if you like it).
- Some Spanish knowledge will come in handy on the island.
- Exchange your money before coming to the island, mostly because of the exchange rates (which are better on the mainland). You can use US Dollars to pay but you’ll most likely get the change in Pesos.
