Visitors to the central Scottish highlands expect to find rough terrain and beautiful scenery, and there’s plenty of both, but they often don’t expect to find many real tourist resorts. But located right in Cairngorms National Park, and surrounded by some of the best ski slopes in Scotland, Aviemore is every bit the resort town. It’s a perfect spot for couples with different ideas of travel – one can relax and take in the nature or shop in town, while the other hikes or skis the mountains.

Being situated in a national park, the town is also a haven for wildlife watchers and photographers. Nearby, in Glen More, is the only free ranging herd of reindeer in the UK, and the area has great opportunities to see ptarmigans, red deer, wild cats and more. There are seven golf courses in the area, and for the serious golfer, the Aviemore and the Cairngorms Golf Pass gets you 30% off at all seven for just £15. Aviemore does not have its own whisky distillery, but being in the highlands, you’re never very far from one, and this is no exception. The Tomatin distillery, once the largest in Scotland, is about twenty miles north, on the way to Inverness.
