The Mentawai Islands consists of about seventy islands off the western coast of Sumatra. with the island of Siberut being the largest. The indigenous inhabitants of the islands are known as the Mentawai people. The islands lie approximately 150 km off the Sumatran coast, across the Mentawai Strait and has become renowned worldwide as a surfing mecca.
